In the 1950s, Borgward was an ambitious company with its sights firmly set on the giants of the post-war German car industry. Their large six-cylinder cars, the Hansa 2400 and later the P100, were meant to compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz and were aggressively forward-looking in their styling and technology. The Isabella was intended to appeal to a wider market; it was priced higher than a Ford or Opel in the domestic market, but lower than a Mercedes. On launch in 1954, the Isabella impressed reviewers with its spacious, airy cabin and excellent brakes, while Borgward’s taste for modern technology was shown by the monocoque construction and hydraulic clutch. The 1500cc engine developed 60bhp initially, rising to 75 by 1958, and was coupled to an all-synchromesh 4-speed column shift gearbox. Available in a variety of body styles, although always 2-door, the Isabella was a good seller, but along with Borgward’s other products left the market in 1961 when the company suffered a bankruptcy that remains controversial and murky to this day.
This 1960 Isabella is the practical estate (Combi) version. It has been restored at some point in the past but unfortunately little else is known about it at the time of cataloguing, as it comes from a deceased estate; it is hoped that more information will be with the car by the time of the sale.
