The 30TS was Renault's range-topping executive car produced between 1975 and 1984. Its specification was sumptuous, including power-assisted steering, four round Quartz-iodide headlights, disc brakes on each corner, electric front windows and central locking all as standard. Offered with a choice of 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic, it was the most upmarket and expensive Renault of the time and of course came with Renault's ‘magic carpet’ ride and hugely comfortable seats as standard.
The 30TS was also the first Renault to benefit from the newly introduced 2,664cc PRV V6 engine. Developed jointly between Peugeot, Renault and Volvo, this unit produced a lazy 130bhp and would propel the 30TS to a top speed of 115 mph. Incorporating the then revolutionary front and rear crumple zones and side impact protection, the 30 was also one of the safest cars of the road at the time. An exceptional car, the only drawback being the huge price tag !
The example on offer was first registered in 1977 and is owned by its second custodian since the importing dealer in December 1976. It must be one of a kind, as it has covered less than 36,000 miles and still has the original manuals and sales brochures in the glovebox. The car’s history shows that it was used from new for twelve years and then placed in storage in 1989. The current owner, a true Renault aficionado acquired this gem in 2014 and has spent the last few years recommissioning it to its current splendid condition.
Very little work was needed, but the brakes were completely overhauled, wheels refurbished and all mechanicals checked over. The stunning interior and red paintwork remain in excellent original condition giving the car a real ‘timewarp’ feel. Supplied new with automatic transmission, the result is a car that looks great, sounds great, will go faster than you need and could well be the most comfortable classic on four wheels.
Being one of just a handful of 30TS’ still in existence, it was the subject of a feature in Classic Cars magazine this autumn. With classic French styling, purring V6 power and oozing 1970s retro charm, this is an opportunity not to be missed by any serious Renault fan.
