The Vauxhall 10-4 may seem like a fairly typical 1930s small family car, but in fact, it marked a significant step forward for the British car industry. When launched at the 1937 London Motor Show, it became the first British production car to feature monocoque construction. With Vauxhall part of the General Motors empire for over a decade already, the car was actually mainly designed in Detroit, but developed and tested in the UK. The new car marked something of a change for Vauxhall, as it was their first entry into the vital 10hp market, having previously focused on larger, more expensive cars. Clearly a lot of effort went into making this car reach Vauxhall’s high standards; in addition to the ground-breaking construction, it also featured independent front suspension, hydraulic brakes, and an overhead valve 1.2 litre engine – all rarities in the 10hp sector at the time.
This 1938 10, with just two owners from new, is in generally good condition, and is said to be happy running on modern unleaded fuel; it may however need some electrical attention. It comes with a V5c.
