Mercedes-Benz introduced the W123 four-door versions in January 1976 and while there were some technical similarities to their predecessors, the new models were larger in wheelbase and exterior dimensions. The styling was also updated, although stylistic links with the W115 were maintained. Initially, all models except 280/280E featured quad unequal-size round headlights and the latter large rectangular units. In 1980/81 the carburetted 280 versions went out of production and the fuel-injected 280E continued to be offered. In September 1982, all models received a mild facelift which included the rectangular headlights, previously fitted only to the 280/280E which were standardized across the board as was power steering. Since February 1982, an optional five-speed manual transmission was available in all models. Optional extras included MB-Tex upholstery, velour or leather upholstery, interior wood trim, passenger side exterior mirror, five-speed manual gearbox, four-speed automatic gearbox, electric windows, vacuum powered central locking, sun roof, air conditioning, climate control, Alpine horn, headlamp wipers, cruise control, power steering, seat heating, catalytic converter for the US markets and later European models. Power assisted disc brakes were standard on all W123s.

This very good, low mileage, 1982 Mercedes-Benz 280 TE Estate finished in Chamonix White with black half leather interior was supplied with electric windows, central locking, air conditioning and Mercedes mudflaps. Purchased by Sir Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees in 1988, it remained with the Gibb’s family for 20 years. The odometer is reading 33,300 miles but the speedo was replaced after a few thousand miles which is documented in the history. In very good order inside and out, recent work carried out include refurbished sills, new headlight lens, re-upholstered drivers’ seat, new Alpine speaker system, a Pioneer under seat sub-woofer and a period style radio head unit. This 280 TE has recently been featured in Classic & Sportscar magazine’s ‘Giant Test’ which was arranged by model expert Mark Cosovic of W123 World. The car is supplied with a V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in September 2019, the original service book with the owners manuals and a file containing service bills and old MoT test certificates going back to 1989 when in the Gibb’s family ownership.
