HISTORICS @ BROOKLANDS
Saturday 22nd September 2018
Brooklands Museum, Weybridge, Surrey

1970 FIAT 500L
Registration No: TTU 925H
Chassis No: N2402749

  • Single family ownership until 2015
  • Sympathetic Abarth upgrades
The Fiat 500 was produced between 1957 and 1975 with limited production of the Fiat 500 K estate continuing until 1977. Despite its diminutive size, the 500 proved to be an enormously practical and popular car throughout Europe capturing the hearts and minds of the public. Launched as the Nuova  500, it was marketed as a cheap and practical town car.  They only measured three metres long and were originally powered by a tiny 479cc two-cylinder, air-cooled engine, the 500 redefined the term 'small car' and is considered one of the first city cars. The 'L' or Lussopenultimate model like the one  offered here today,  was produced between 1968 and 1972 and featured a much modernised interior including a renewed dashboard which brought the car  up to date. Greater comfort and style were provided in this new model for the new generation.
On a visit to an Italian industrialist to view a collection of motorbikes our vendor tripped over this fabulous Fiat 500 L parked in the corner of a factory, the car which had been owned by the industrialists mother from new had been parked inside for a number of years. Our vendor and his wife were taken by the provenance and rust free nature of the car, they could see through the dust at what could be a fabulous collectors example of the plucky 500. This Fiat is offered in orange with black trim and roll back sunroof. Once purchased it was driven from the town near Modena all the way to its new home in the UK, the trip is documented in the history folder and amounted to 1,562 kilometers, a brave journey for a new classic car purchase. Since our vendor purchased this example he has invested in sympathetically uprating the engine to include an Abarth sump , barrels and camshaft coupled to remedial works to ensure the brakes function well, this was necessary to be able to use the car in modern day traffic and complement the extra 50cc. The mileage is believed to be correct, with just one family owner until 2015 this is a great example of the iconic 500 and one you could comfortably drive in today's traffic as regular trips to Goodwood have proven!
