SATURDAY 7th JULY 2018
1963 AUSTIN A35
Reg. no. 430 JOL
Chassis no. 27065
Engine no. IAOB-UL I4806
Replacing the successful A30 in 1956, the 35 in the name of Austin’s new small car reflected the increase in power to 34bhp thanks to an enlarged 948cc A-Series engine – not quite 35bhp, but together with better-spaced gear ratios, the new car offered a decent improvement in performance. The saloon model was phased out after just three years, replaced by the A40 Farina, but the estate lasted until 1962 and the van until 1968. These later vehicles benefitted from the 1098cc version of the A-Series, further improving performance.
A popular modification in period was the fitment of a rear seat in a van, and the adding of side windows, thus creating a practical family car. This is just what happened in the case of this A35. Believed to have been in the same family from new, it was purchased by the vendor’s husband from his uncle in 1968; subsequently, the conversion was carried out and the car was used for holidays and days out through the 70s and 80s. Passed to his widow in 1995, it was then driven by her son-in-law on occasion until 2012, since when it has been garaged. In fair condition, any recommissioning this car needs should be a simple process given the excellent support for the model; thereafter, it should provide practical and characterful transport. It comes with a V5 and an old-style log book.
