1964 JENSEN CV8 MkIII
- Colour: Red
- Registration Number: 839 HYU
- Chassis No.: 1042199
- Engine size: 6,296 cc
- Engine No.: 200/04/V8
- Estimate: £15,000 - £20,000
As this Motor review attests, the Jensen C-V8 Mk 1, introduced at the October 1962 Earls Court Motor Show, was truly a startlingly rapid machine.
"The impression that emerged was of a car superbly suited to Grand Touring in the true sense. A very smooth silent 6-litre engine and transmission gave it a performance so effortless as to be entirely deceptive. It comes as a shock to find that the figures (136mph and 0-100mph in 20.9 sec) make it one of the fastest cars we have ever tested and certainly the fastest four-seater."
Penned by Eric Neale in consultation with the Jensen brothers, its dramatic glass fibre bodywork was mounted on an advanced tubular chassis. Equipped with independent coil-sprung front suspension, a 'live' rear axle, four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes, a limited slip differential and rack and pinion steering.
Not content to sit on their laurels, Jensen released an updated MkII version in October 1963. Distinguished by various minor body modifications, it remained in production until July 1965 and featured an even larger 6.3-litre Chrysler USA sourced powerplant with a four-barrel Carter carb that put out 330bhp. Having 425lbft of torque gave it more grunt than a platoon of US Marines! It also boasted one of the finest interiors of its time, sumptuously trimmed in top quality hide.
First registered 1st April 1964, the car you see today is a MkII model, one of just 250 made.
It appears to have spent some time in Ireland before being repatriated when purchased by the Vendor in 1994. Resplendent in Red with a Mushroom hide interior, the car has spent most of the past 22 years in dry storage from which it emerged for its photo shoot.
The engine runs and the car goes and stops, but it will need some attention before the new owner sets off on a journey further than the local garage. The body and paint are in overall good condition, and it appears that all the switches and gauges operate. The interior is in nice condition considering its lack of use, and after a weekend spent with some leather, treatment should look luxurious once again.
Of the 500 Jensen C-V8 models produced in total, only 248 are known to survive worldwide and we can’t help feeling that this rarity, along with their striking looks and prodigious performance, makes them somewhat undervalued in the current market.
