Sometimes a Brian James trailer is just not enough.
This 1959 car transporter was styled by Pinin Farina as a mobile workshop to enable the British Motor Corporation to train its dealers and their mechanics in the finer points of the new Mini. This is one of the lucky ones, having had a major restoration over 10 years by “larger than life” businessman and classic racer Graham Galliers.
There are photographs and details on file of the work involved, but the short story is that the transporter is an effective and reliable piece of kit. During the restoration the original BMC Diesel engine was replaced by a Cummins 6 litre turbo-Diesel and six-speed gearbox, enabling it to cruise all day at 60mph. The original engine comes with the transporter and the vendor is happy to deliver it anywhere within mainland Britain.
There is a clear 20’ behind the rear passenger seats, which will enable the transporter to take most classic racing cars and with a little jiggery-pokery would accept two Minis.
The drop-down rear door is hydraulically operated, there is a fitted workbench (with vice), and there is plenty of storage for tools, etc. as well as specific storage for oil and fuel. The vendor has driven this transporter to a number of race-meetings over the past few years and reports that it cruises happily even towing a trailer!
Period race transports are a must-have with certain sections of the classic racing fraternity and this BMC bullet is one of the best. Although they are by no means common, one did turn up in America not so long ago and there was one in auction in the UK last year - £91,000! Which makes this one look even more appealing. How can you go racing without it?
