Allington, near Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN14 6LJ
SATURDAY 7th JULY 2018
1930 CHRYSLER 77 ROADSTER
- only known example in the Uk
Reg. no. GN 4584
Chassis no. JP 3935
Engine no. W 11345
The series 77 featured a 4 1/4 litre engine coupled to a four speed \'multi-range\' gearbox and there were 1,729 cars built. The L-head six-cylinder engine, was capable of producing 93 horsepower and there are four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes all round.
Part of Chrysler\'s success was their racing pedigree. Their cars appeared at Le Mans, Spa and in the Mille Miglia from 1924. In 1930, two model 77 Roadster raced at Spa in Belgium. A Chrysler driven by Stoffel and De Costier finished 5th behind three Alfas and a Bugatti.
This car was bought new from Chrysler Motors, Great Portland Street, London by Mr R.A.B. Shaw, a London barrister and then used by him until 1968. Although it is a 1930 model, it was not registered until early 1931 as it had been a demonstrator for Chrysler Motors. The current owner purchased the car in 1969 from Mr Shaw and he then used it until 1978, when, \'in a weak moment\' (his words) he sold it to a friend in order to buy an 8-cylinder coupe. He immediately regretted selling the car, missing the \'sportiness and performance of the 77 Roadster\'. It took until 1994 to get the 77 back and our vendor has enjoyed it ever since. We are told that this is the only 77 Roadster in the UK and probably the only one in Europe. In 2008 the car was extensively restored and it has covered approximately 12,000 miles since. This original RHD car has now been converted to a 12v system.
Our vendor describes this Chrysler as \'a fast and reliable touring car\'; now finished in an original colour scheme of \'cats eye green\' and black, this car is fitted with full weather equipment and ready for use. It is offered with its original buff logbook and its original instruction book, in addition to a V5c and a selection of bills going back to the 1940s, one of which is a bill for an engine rebuild in 1950 at a cost of £51!
Extra details and estimates:
