Arriving in 1985 and named to celebrate Alfa Romeo’s seventy five years of production, the ‘75’ inherited much from its predecessor, the 116 Giulietta, but came with a dash of modern Italian technical wizardry such as a diagnostic computer on the dash, an almost perfectly balanced front and rear, essentially courtesy of a rear mounted gearbox, and a stylish sharp-edged design by one Ermanno Cressoni. The late Eighties saw success on the touring car track for the ‘75’, which no doubt enhanced the model’s popularity; in all, 386,767 units came out of Arese when production ceased in 1992.
This exceedingly rare modern classic limited edition 75 has clearly been cared for to a high standard throughout its life; a schedule of maintenance from June 1994 (at 17149 miles) until March 2017 (at 179904 miles) at a total cost of £21,167.47 is recorded in the history file. In June 2000, at 120400 miles, a replacement rebuilt and balanced engine was installed, the suspension was lowered by 25mm and overhauled, new rear sports road springs were fitted, and the braking system was rebuilt and upgraded. All work was carried out by Clive Hodgkin of Avon Racing, the Alfa Romeo Championship winning technician. Other major work has included the complete special re-trimming of the interior and the reupholstering of the seats in red suede leather. The Alfa is equipped with a stainless steel exhaust system. Refinements include Recaro seats, an adjustable leather steering wheel, an electric sunroof and windows and polish light alloy road wheels.
With just four previous owners, due to lack of time, this desirable ‘75’ has had limited recent use by its current custodian; although it has a new MOT test certificate, we would advise that a recommissioning service is carried out prior to returning the motor car to the road.
The Limited Edition series number 3457 is mounted on the dashboard and the vast history file includes the aforesaid schedule of maintenance, a sales brochure, a large quantity of invoices and correspondence, twenty two MOT test certificates, road tax discs, a workshop manual and the original leather wallet containing the handbooks, service book, the last sales invoice dated 10.1.1998, the V5 document, an old V5C registration certificate together with the current.
