1922 CITROEN AC4 VAN
Registration Number: BF 6523
Chassis Number: 82673
Estimate: £5000 - £7000
This Citroën is no van ordinaire, having started life as five window, two-door coupé in 1929 and, it is believed, was converted to a van during the war.
There is a story that the car was converted for use by the Resistance and that the neat hole in the windscreen is a gun-port….but it is just as likely that the hole allowed the owner to carry an extra-long baguette back from the boulangerie. In fact, the plaque on the dashboard indicates that the van was owned by a market gardener, which is more likely reason for the conversion, if a little more prosaic. The new owner can choose which story to perpetuate: Resistance or radishes.
The van was first registered in the UK on the 4th July 2013 and has been in the vendor’s ownership since May 2015. It is believed that it was owned by members of the same family until 2001.
The 1,628cc engine has recently had new piston rings, valves reground and a new head gasket fitted and the crankshaft bearings were checked at the same time and found to be in good condition. The van was running well when it was being manoeuvred for our photographer. The bodywork is in good condition for its age and a new rear curtain has been fitted recently.
This is an ideal promotional vehicle, particularly for the rural smallholder who sells at farmers’ markets (how about that for niche marketing?). The 1,628cc engine and its 30bhp driving through a three-speed gearbox will haul the van and contents along at 50mph (with the wind behind you) and up most hills if you are not in a hurry. Solid, rugged and full of character: they certainly don’t make Citröens like that anymore.
Offered for sale with V5C, instruction book, and parts list.
