BONHAMS AUCTIONS
THE PADUA AUCTION
SATURDAY 28th OCTOBER 2017
PADUA, ITALY
* Landmark early Honda automobile
* One of the most sought-after Japanese micro-cars
* Very rare in its original colour of Caroline Yellow
* Documented 55,000 kilometres from new
* Faithfully restored to original specification
Not surprisingly, considering that it was the world's largest producer of motorcycles, Honda's first sports cars featured technology borrowed from its Grand Prix-winning two-wheelers. Engines were all-aluminium, twin-overhead-camshaft, four-cylinder, water-cooled units, with four carburettors and roller bearings used throughout, while the early S500 model employed a part-chain transmission. In 1964 the S500 was superseded by the S600, which featured a 600cc engine and a conventional rear axle, though for some markets chain drive was retained. The first Honda automobile to be sold in Europe, the S600 was available as a coupé or convertible. When fully equipped (there were two trim levels offered) the S600 came with special paint, reversing lights, better seats, a cigarette lighter, a heater, and a radio and loudspeaker as standard. With 57bhp on tap, this little gem could reach 140km/h (90mph) and was capable of giving the large Sprites and Midgets a run for their money.
This rare early Honda sports car is presented in its original Caroline Yellow livery (colour code Y3) and has been the subject of a complete and meticulous restoration. Everything is to original factory specification: the interior is trimmed in black vinyl, and to rebuild part of a backrest an entire seat was ordered directly from the USA, while the radio is an original Honda Z600 component and not an after-market unit. The car has covered only some 55,000 kilometres from new. All parts subject to wear have been replaced including the clutch assembly, ignition leads, and all worn rubber parts, also ordered in the USA. Completed in 2017, this careful restoration has resulted in a car that has to be one of the very best of its type currently available. A truly rare and interesting model, both from a technological and aesthetic point of view, this charming little Honda comes complete with tool kit, service booklet, and instruction manual. The last Revisione (roadworthiness test) was carried out in September 2016.
