1927 AUSTIN 12 DOCTORS COUPE
Registration Number - UO 1488
Chassis Number - 5368
Engine - 1,861cc
Engine Number - 29896
NO RESERVE
One of two Austin 12/4s on offer in this auction, this Doctor’s CoupĂ© (by Mulliners) was first registered on 23rd March 1927 to William Henry Hicks of Paignton, Devon and was supplied by the local Austin agent Soul & Saunders, also of Paignton.
We don’t know much about Mr Hicks, except that he was generously proportioned, resembling “a porker overlooking a gate and probably liked a drink or two". (As a company Brightwells are working towards being non-judgemental – we like a drink now and then, who doesn’t and some of us could stand to lose some weight - but we are only quoting from a charming, slightly scurrilous but no-less amusing letter written by a previous owner in the mid-‘60s.)
The Austin stayed with Mr Hicks until 1934, when he sold the car to his drinking chum J S Huggins, also of Paignton. In 1946 the car went to Mr H L Willkinson, also of that parish, before moving on the following year to Mr P T E Wills - who did not live in Paignton but – Lord help him – in Deptford, South Brent. Only half an hour away from the bright lights of Paignton but, well, let’s just say they do things differently there. Mr Wills did not keep the Austin long before passing it on to AD Rogers, who lived just down the road.
In conditions possibly akin to those in “Cold Comfort Farm” or even “The Grapes of Wrath” the poor Austin was reduced to general farm work, towing a trailer, and – who knows – ploughing a field? Oh, the indignity of it all. It all came to a sorry end in 1962 when, as a result of neglect, the engine was frost-damaged, the car was thrown aside before being rescued – Hallelujah! – by Derek Adams, of Okehampton.
An enlightened man, Mr Adams rectified the wrongs, rebuilt the engine, including re-metalling the bearings, fitted new driveshaft couplings, re-painted the car (back to its original Olive green), fitted new tyres and “everything restored to original condition…..even down to the correct period clock” as he writes in that letter from the mid-‘60s.
The vendor has owned the Austin for the last twenty years, during which time it has been in regular use. The car has been re-sprayed at some time since Mr Adams’s ownership but it still looks original and quietly impressive. It has had a recent magneto rebuild and the flywheel balanced.
This is a nice, usable vintage car which has an impressive air of originality even if we know it once lived a hard life down on the farm. It is not known how much of Mr Adams’s work remains but the car is very smart and presentable and the new owner will have little if anything to attend to. Not the quickest car off the blocks but one that is certain to get you where you want to go and in comfort and some style.
Offered here with a V5C, buff log book, some receipts and that letter from Mr Adams!
