1978 CITROEN DYANE 6
The Citröen Dyane – a 2CV in a party frock? Well, why not? 1·4 million Frenchmen can’t be wrong (that’s how many Dyanes were made – a pretty staggering figure).
Based, on the 2CV (5 million sold) the Dyane has the same interconnected, centrally-sprung, knife-edge suspension that allows it drive over ploughed fields and sleeping policemen with impunity.
The engine is also the quirky twin-cylinder unit from the 2CV in either 425cc (26bhp) or mighty 602cc (32bhp) format, as here. Not huge power outputs, but then the whole car only weighs around 600kg.
The 2CV format was already well established when the Dyane made its first appearance in January 1968, but the styling of the newer car allowed it to outsell the original within the first year (99,000 against 58,000). Okay, the 2CV outsold the Dyane three years later in its final production year, but the Dyane soldiered on in production until 1984, a testament to just what a good car it was.
For many years the 2CV was either a cliché (all green and hippy) or a bit of a joke (thank you, Jasper Carrott) but there has been a bit of a resurgence in recent years: they are quirky, fun to drive, easy to maintain and parts are both plentiful and cheap. The Dyane has all the benefits of being a 2CV without being the butt of cruel Midlands humour and hippies are (praise the Lord) a thing of the past.
This December 1978 Dyane 6 (which, as you know, refers to the capacity, 602cc, not the number of cylinders) was bought by the vendor in 2013 from a neighbour (only its second owner) who had been storing it in his garage for the previous nine years. The proud new owner lifted the body and made the few minor repairs that were required to an otherwise good, original chassis which was then painted and Waxyold inside and out. The body also needed only minor rectification and the original Nevada Beige paintwork was refreshed as required.
The wheels were shot-blasted and stove enamelled and new brake shoes and pads fitted. The engine was pepped up with electronic ignition, a new alternator and coil and a new exhaust system. Inside, new seats were installed with a beige, orange and brown colour scheme that takes you straight back to the groovy Seventies.
The effort of this toil has produced a lovely example of the genre and one which sailed through its MOT in August this year with no advisories recorded. Still showing only 69,100 miles on the clock, it is doubtless ready for another 40 years of comfortable, frugal motoring. It comes with four old MOTs, a handbook and a service book.
The Dyane has all the plus points of the 2CV with a little-added chic. It is still a practical car – modern day traffic rarely moves any faster than it did in the ‘70s. An ideal second car for the family who likes to be a little bit different, it is also a worthy riposte to the school-run-mum in her oversize SUV.
AMENDMENT: The previous owner had it for 19 years, not 9
