1929 RILEY 9 Mk IV Tourer

It was the very advanced chassis and more especially the radical new engine design of the Riley 9 that so excited and astonished the motoring world when the new car was seen in prototype form at Shelsley Walsh in 1926. The 4-cylinder overhead valve engine had hemispherical combustion chambers and large inclined valves operated by light pushrods from a pair of camshafts, one for exhaust the other for inlet. These camshafts were set high in the crankcase, and had two splash lubricated bearings. The crankshaft was a very stiff 2-bearing design, fully balanced both statically and dynamically, and this coupled with the excellent cylinder head, designed by Percy Riley, allowed the engine to rev freely and produce exceptional power from only 1100 ccs. The chassis was entirely conventional but very well designed with a robust 4-speed gearbox and powerful 4-wheel brakes adjustable from the cockpit. The low build endowed the chassis with exceptional road holding, and the '9' established a series of quite exceptional light cars many years in advance of the norm.

The open four door four seat tourers were built with fabric or aluminium panelling, as here, on an ash frame, and the early cars weighed only 17 ½ hundredweight, allowing brisk performance with 45 mph available in third, nearly 70 mph in top, and an average of 40 mpg. S.C.H. Davis competed in the 1927 Lands End Trial in one of the first tourers available, and development continued apace by J.G. Parry-Thomas and later Reid Railton, eventually culminating in the Brooklands Nine

Much has been written about the Austin Seven, which provided a certain level of transport, in various shapes and sizes, from 1923 to 1939. The diminutive 747cc side valve engine, driven through a 3 or 4-speed manual gearbox, produced enough power to carry up to 4 persons with luggage. The varieties on offer included Saloons, Tourers and Commercials, and some with sports and racing pedigrees.

DLO 410 is for the person who cannot quite decide whether to have a saloon or a tourer. Being close to the popular Ruby saloon in concept and sharing the same drivetrain, the Pearl Cabriolet allows the roof to be folded right back to the bottom of the rear window, yet the sides are preserved to provide some protection from the elements, complete with normal wind up windows.

The Pearl has been the subject of a photographed restoration in the late 1990s. It has been dry stored since 2008 and it is thought that recommissioning should be a relatively straightforward task. Certainly, the paintwork looked quite promising under the years of dust in evidence when inspected. We know it appeared in an episode of ‘Midsomer Murders’ on 6th August 2010; it was not required to be running. A charming little motor car, well worth a little fettling and quite a rare exhibit at Shows and Rallies

A V5C registration certificate accompanies the Austin, together with an RF60 registration book, various photographs, as mentioned and a wiring diagram.

Auction Date: 8 June 2017

1934 RILEY 9 MONACO

Registration No. AUW 311
Chassis No. 6023769
Engine No. 6023769
Estimate: £18,000-£20,000

The Riley Nine was introduced to huge acclaim in 1926 and featured a very advance four-cylinder 1100 cc engine with overhead valves operated by short pushrods from two camshafts set high in the block. This proved very powerful and efficient, and with the new advanced chassis moved Riley into a higher league and gave rise to a series of superb sporting cars.

The low build of the chassis and the design incorporating the rear seats within the wheelbase allowed a relatively low body line and the resulting radical new saloon, now called the Monaco, was at once a style leader, and sold very well at a price of £298. The saloon was available with aluminium panelling as here, or with a sporting lightweight fabric body on Weymann principles. The forward opening front doors, high waisted body, narrowing significantly towards the chassis, with low seating and narrow roof made these cars very appealing.

Although the V5c states that this is a 1932 car, the chassis number indicates it is actually an early 1934 model.

Little is known of its early history, but the car spent time in London and North Wales, in the hands of various enthusiastic owners, until acquired in sorry state by the previous keeper.

A complete rebuilt was then undertaken, new ash frame was fitted, with head lining, floor and carpets, as well as a new radiator core, brake linings, reconditioned dynamo, chrome parts, two batteries, refurbished wheels and new tyres etc.

AUW 311 was then sold to the current vendor, who has finished the Riley to a very high standard. Now in a wonderful period green, with black wings and re-trimmed seats etc
