1967 JAGUAR 240 - BARONS 15/12/15

COMING TO AUCTION
FROM
BARONS AUCTIONS
15th DECEMBER 2015
SANDOWN PARK, ESHER, SURREY

1967 JAGUAR 240

The 420/Sovereign traces its origins back to the Jaguar Mark 2, which was introduced in 1959 and sold through most of the 1960s. Jaguar thought that a similar sized car with high standards of technical sophistication and luxury would be successful. Demands for more luxurious features would add weight to any future models, forcing the drive towards a 4.2-litre-engined compact saloon. A combination of the 4.2-litre engine with the compact saloon body was expected to have market appeal.
Consequently, Sir William initiated development of a new saloon based on the S-Type, retaining its 54-inch independent rear suspension but adding a twin-carburettor version of the 4.2-litre powerplant and frontal styling more akin to that of the Mark X. The new car was released in August 1966 in the form of two badge-engineered models, the Jaguar 420 and the Daimler Sovereign.
This is the rare sought after manual with overdrive, version of the refined Jaguar 420. Opalescent Silver Blue, with Blue Leather seats, this car has lots of Service/Repair receipts, some dating back as far as the car's 1st Service. There are also old MOTs, and the current one was issued with only one advisory. Things such as all the  door locks, heater, etc work, the choke has been converted to manual operation, and the car comes with a Full Tool Kit. The car drives extremely well.

BARONS AUCTIONS
15th DECEMBER 2015
SANDOWN PARK, ESHER, SURREY

1972 TRABANT 601 CONVERTIBLE

The Trabant was produced by East German car maker VEB Zwickau, Saxony. It was the most common vehicle in East Germany, and was also exported to countries both inside and outside the Eastern Bloc. It was advertised as having room for four adults and luggage in a compact and durable shell; and being relatively fast. It was produced for nearly 30 years with almost no significant changes; 3,096,099 Trabants were produced in total.
This example was first seen at the NEC  in 2014 and since then it has had a total makeover of new paint chrome and interior.
This car will pull the crowds wherever it goes!!!

1964 CADILLAC COUPE DE VILLE - BARONS AUCTIONS 15/12/15

COMING TO AUCTION
FROM

Barons Auctioneers
15th DECEMBER 2015
SANDOWN PARK, ESHER, SURREY

1964 CADILLAC COUPE DE VILLE

It was time for another facelift in 1964 and really a minor one. New at the front was a bi-angular grille that formed a V-shape along both its vertical and horizontal planes. The main horizontal grille bar was now carried around the body sides. Outer grille extension panels again housed the parking and cornering lamps. It was the 17th consecutive year for the Cadillac tailfins with a new fine-blade design carrying on the tradition. Performance improvements including a larger V-8 were the dominant changes for the model run. Equipment features were same as in 1963 for the most part. Comfort Control, a completely automatic heating and air conditioning system controlled by a dial thermostat on the instrument panel, was introduced as an industry first. Engine size was increased to 429 cu in, with 340 hp available. Performance gains from the new engine showed best in the lower range, at 20 to 50 mph traffic driving speeds. A new technical feature was the Turbo-Hydramatic transmission. A De Ville script above the lower belt molding was continued as an identifier. This was the first year for the De Ville Convertible. De Ville sales reached 110,379 units, accounting for nearly two thirds of all Cadillacs sold.
Here we have a 1964 Cadillac Coupe De Ville 429 V8 Big Block, 2 door pillar-less, in lovely Powder Blue, with a white hard top. Mostly all original from what can be seen. Equipped with power windows, electric seats etc, by the looks of it the car has a custom exhaust that sounds great.  The car looks stunning and in the vendors opinion it will need very little restoration to bring the car up to A1 condition. It has been used daily up until now. There are a small few rust bubbles on the bottom half of the car and a few on the boot lid but nothing that looks horrible.  All the seats look very original some wear and tear, but nothing you wouldn't expect from a car this age. This is, and has been, a very reliable car. It starts first time with no apparent issues, brakes, gearbox, engine and suspension all seem in good order.

FOOTNOTES

  • Bonhams is proud to offer the exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire a landmark in the history of Land Rover. This vehicle is the two-millionth Series Land Rover and Defender model to roll down the hallowed production line in Solihull, UK, the home of the Land Rover since 1948.

Very few milestone cars like this are ever offered for sale and the significance of 'Defender 2,000,000' is amplified by three noteworthy considerations.

Firstly, the car's provenance is exceptional. It was commissioned by Land Rover to celebrate 67 years of production and features a bespoke design, expertly executed by Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations team. An all-star cast of 33 notable figures from Land Rover's past and present joined Land Rover associates on the production line to hand-build the car.

Adventurer Bear Grylls fitted the wheels. Stephen and Nick Wilks, the sons of the Wilks brothers who created the car in 1947, assembled the roof. Entrepreneur and Defender owner Theo Paphitis fitted the rear seats and lights. Actress Virginia McKenna, OBE, founder of the Born Free Foundation fitted the registration plates. Mike Adamson, Chief Executive of the British Red Cross fitted the headlights. The vehicle's identifying VIN plate was attached by Dr Ralf Speth, CEO, Jaguar Land Rover.

The second important consideration is that this milestone Land Rover was built in May 2015 - during the Defender's final phase of production. Values of important and collectible Land Rovers and Range Rovers have surged recently as the classic car world acknowledges their significance and desirability, and the end of production will further intensify competition for the best and most significant examples.

Most landmark Land Rovers were never offered for sale and remain in the care of Land Rover or the Heritage Motor Centre, such as the millionth Land Rover, a unique Series III station wagon built in 1976. As early as 1960 the company found, bought back and restored the now-famous HUE 166, the first pre-production Land Rover from March 1948.

Thirdly, and most importantly, all proceeds from the sale will benefit two charities with which Land Rover has had a long association, and which both rely upon Land Rovers to conduct their vital work. Representatives of the Born Free Foundation and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies helped to build Defender 2,000,000, and they have specific plans for the proceeds of the auction (see accompanying text).

    Global Impact

In the long history of the car, very few designs have been as significant, as successful or as long-lived as the Land Rover. It is rightly considered to be one of the landmark cars in automotive history. The Land Rover's engineering was radical and brilliant when it was launched in 1948 but its real significance goes beyond its intrinsic qualities. It lies in what the Land Rover has done for its country: as an export earner, as a linchpin of the post-war British car industry, as a workhorse for Britain's farmers, transport for soldiers and anyone with a sense of adventure. The Land Rover has carried people to the most remote corners of the globe, and brought them back safely again. It has touched the lives of countless millions over its 67 years, and over that time has become a global automotive icon in its own right.

As unique as the badge on the bonnet

"Creating a bespoke Defender to mark such an important milestone was a great opportunity," said Land Rover's Design Director and Chief Creative Officer Gerry McGovern. "When it came to inspiration there was only one place to look: Red Wharf Bay. It was here on the beach that Maurice Wilks first drew the outline of a Land Rover in the sand. It's the historic birthplace of our Land Rover brand and this vehicle is a fitting tribute."

A map of Red Wharf Bay in Anglesey has been engraved in raw, hand-brushed aluminium on the car's front fender. This references the car's lightweight, rust-resistant aluminium bodywork - a necessity of post-war rationing which became central to its appeal.

A unique 'no. 2,000,000' badge adorns the rear of the vehicle, and is echoed by a badge on the interior console. The Ebony Windsor leather seats also feature the Red Wharf Bay graphic on cloth inserts. Door grabs and the fascia grab also feature the Red Wharf Bay map contours, and 'no 2,000,000' logos have been stitched on the headrests. A bespoke aluminium plaque, signed by everyone who helped to assemble the vehicle is fitted to the driver's seat plinth.

The car is finished in Indus Silver satin paint with Santorini Black wheels and wheel arches, roof, door hinges, grille and mirror caps. It features the premium materials found on today's range-topping Defender Autobiography, with leather and machined aluminium finishes to the fascia, steering wheel, gear knob and transfer knob, hand brake and door casings. Defender 2,000,000 has been UK registered as S90 HUE: a reference to the first pre-production Land Rover, HUE 166, its home in Solihull and this car's 90-inch wheelbase.

This is an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire one of the most striking examples of one of the world's most significant cars, which already bears a remarkable provenance in the roster of people who built it. The proceeds from the sale will do what Land Rovers have done since their earliest days; bring help to people and animals alike, regardless of how remote.

    THE CHARITIES

Since its earliest days, Land Rover has brought help and hope to those who have needed it most, but been hardest to reach. Defender 2,000,000 continues that proud tradition. Proceeds from its sale will be donated in their entirety to further the work of its longstanding humanitarian and conservation partners: the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and the Born Free Foundation.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies

The relationship between the IFRC and Land Rover started with the British Red Cross (a member of the IFRC) more than sixty years ago. Today, it is a relationship that extends to the IFRC's global aid efforts.

In that time, over 120 Land Rovers have been loaned or donated to the charity. They have brought humanitarian and long-term aid directly to an estimated 800,000 people, and indirect help to at least a million more.

Today the relationship has developed into an ambitious and far-reaching partnership, funding humanitarian projects on four continents, helping vulnerable people in crisis situations.

In 2012 Land Rover made the IFRC's sustainable water and sanitation project in Uganda the focus of the most ambitious fund-raising activity in the company's history, a 10,000-mile expedition to Beijing undertaken by the one millionth Land Rover Discovery. The 50-day journey generated £1 million for the project.

"We are very grateful for Land Rover's continued and generous support over the years," said Mike Adamson, Chief Executive of the British Red Cross.

"The proceeds from the auction of Defender 2,000,000 will provide much-needed support for communities in Nepal, helping them respond to and recover from crises such as frequent flooding, landslides and earthquakes. This new project will help communities establish sustainable livelihoods and make sure they can adapt to and anticipate the issues they face today, before they become greater problems tomorrow."

    Born Free Foundation:

The origin of Land Rover's historic association with the Born Free Foundation goes back to the charity's very beginnings. Land Rovers featured in the classic 1966 wildlife film Born Free, which starred Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, and later inspired them to establish the charity which now bears its name.

Land Rover first started working in partnership with Born Free in 2002. The current partnership will see Land Rover vehicles deployed by the Foundation in Kenya, Ethiopia, India and South Africa, where they support the charity's vital field work.

"The Born Free Foundation is on the front line of conservation and wild animal welfare and to get us to that front line we rely on Land Rovers," said Will Travers OBE, President of the Born Free Foundation.

"It is essential not only that we can get into some truly challenging locations, but also that we can successfully carry out our mission and get out. Safety, security and reliability are paramount. That is why, on behalf of Born Free and our supporters all around the world, I am deeply appreciative of Land Rover's ongoing support and delighted that our vital partnership continues to go from strength to strength."

"The funds raised through the auction of the monumental Defender 2,000,000 will be put towards our ongoing conservation work in Kenya with a particular focus on our 'Lion Rover' project in Meru. This is a newly established initiative which works with the Kenya Wildlife Service, Land Rover and the local community to ensure that lions are free to live and thrive in the area for generations to come."

SALEROOM NOTICES

  • Bonhams is delighted to announce that all proceeds from the sale of this lot will be donated to charity and that no buyer's premium will be charged on the hammer price. Jaguar Land Rover is aware that some countries may not permit registration of new Land Rover Defender vehicles. These countries include Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Gulf States, India, Iraq, Japan, Taiwan, Korea (North), Korea (South), and United States of America. The winning bidder will, if they plan on registering the vehicle in any country, need to ensure they meet market regulatory requirements for Vehicle Registration.

1968 FORD ESCORT MkI SUPER - H&H AUCTIONS 9/12/15

COMING TO AUCTION
FROM
9th DECEMBER 2015
CHATEAU IMPNEY, DROITWICH

1968 FORD ESCORT MkI SUPER

- Extensively restored / uprated in 2003 and little used since
- Dunnell Zetec 16v engine, 2000E gearbox, upgraded brakes etc
- History file includes original invoice from Candor Motors Ltd (May 1968)

This smartly-presented MKI Escort started life in May 1968 as an unpretentious 1300cc Super. Now it is an altogether different kettle of automotive fish and clearly capable of springing all sorts of surprises on the road, and probably the track too. Uprated suspension gives it a lower, meaner stance and we understand the modified braking system includes discs at the rear as well as the front. In place of the original Kent engine lurks a far more exciting Dunnell 2-litre Zetec unit, complete with wrapped stainless steel exhaust manifold. The passenger cell abounds with competition-orientated modifications, including: roll cage; Corbeau racing seats; Luke four-point harnesses; Sparco pedals; battery master switch; leather-rimmed alloy steering wheel; and OMEX rev-counter. Where the luggage used to sit are housed the competition fuel system, alloy petrol tank and battery. Outside you'll find a period door mirror and a set of very smart Ford alloy wheels. 'YWC 587F' is now looking for a suitably appreciative new home and comes complete with its original sales invoice, plus a large collection of other bills; including some from MKI Escort specialist Burton Power. Always popular and still winning on track and rally stage alike, MKI Escorts are now highly collectable.

1972 VOLVO P1800 ES - H&H AUCTIONS

COMING TO AUCTION
FROM
1972 Volvo P1800 ES

1972 VOLVO P1800 ES

- Three keepers from new and 94,000 recorded miles
- Garaged for 29 years by its original owner
- Described as 'original and never restored'

Introduced in August 1971, the Volvo P1800ES was arguably one of the world's first 'lifestyle' estate cars (a genre now typified by the BMW 3-Series Touring). Boasting notably greater luggage space thanks to its extended roof line and sharply raked glass tailgate, the model came with a more powerful Bosch fuel-injected 1986cc OHV four-cylinder powerplant as standard. Further benefiting from four-wheel disc brakes and the choice of either four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission, it remained in production until 1973 (by which time some 8,078 are thought to have been made).
The 'time warp' P1800ES now offered is a genuine three-owner vehicle, which is now displaying an unwarranted 94,000 miles, yet was garaged for no less than 29 years by its original owner. It has apparently never been restored and is presented in its original pleasing livery of Metallic Blue bodywork, Black leather upholstery and Blue carpeting. The vendor these days regards the bodywork, paintwork and four-speed manual plus overdrive transmission as 'very good' and the 2-litre engine as 'good'. The venerable Volvo comes with an MOT valid to January 28th 2016.

*Rare and exclusive 'sports estate' conversion
*Combines practicality with exceptional performance
*Benefiting from extensive recent servicing
*Outstanding value for money

FOOTNOTES

  • 'On the road there was nothing untoward about the Eventer's behaviour, no unwanted wind noise and no diminution of the XJ-S's unquestionable performance. Unlike so many estate car conversions over the years, the Eventer looks as though it has been conceived as a single, unified design, not as an afterthought...' – Motor Sport.

Conceived as a luxurious and long-legged Grand Routier, the XJ-S, though by no means a small car, afforded precious little in terms of interior space: two adults and an overnight bag being about the limit if its comfortable capacity. In the absence of a factory 'estate' it was left to the Hastings-based restorer and coachbuilder Lynx to exploit the model's full potential. Lynx had every reason to be confident that such a market existed, given the success of the 'sports estate' concept in the form of the Reliant Scimitar GTE and Lancia Beta HPE. In reconfiguring the XJ-S, Lynx extended the roof, moved the rear seats back, repositioned the fuel tank and added a tailgate, thus providing increased passenger leg room and an impressive claimed 23.75cu ft of load space with the seats up, almost 42cu ft with them folded flat. Lynx's conversion added £6,950+VAT to the £21,000 list price, making Eventer ownership the privilege of a wealthy few. Even today there are few cars that combine near-silent 155mph performance with the luggage capacity of a family estate.

We are advised that this Eventer was purchased from CKL Developments of Battle, East Sussex in December 2014 for £46,000 following extensive improvements to the exterior paintwork, including improving and refitting the tailgate, at a cost in excess of £4,360. Subsequent works carried out by a local Jaguar specialist include fitting new foot brake and handbrake pads; two radius arm bushes; oil, fuel and air (x2) filters; and replaced water pump, coolant hoses and drive belts (x4). In addition, the air conditioning compressor and dryer have been replaced and re-gassed; spark plugs and HT leads renewed; and the vacuum hose and wiper arms replaced. Parts and labour total some £4,500. Turning to the interior, the leather upholstery was thoroughly serviced, panels being replaced wherever necessary, and then cleaned and re-Connollised at a cost of just under £1,000. All receipts accompany the car together with service history, tax discs, MoT certificates (including current) and a V5C registration document. This Eventer is said to drive well and look good, the passenger compartment in particular.
