1938 BMW 327 CABRIOLET

Estimate: €140,000 - €170,000
Registration Number: German Registered
Chassis Number: 73246
The BMW 327 is a medium sized touring coupé produced by the Bavarian firm between 1937 and 1941, and again produced after 1945. It sat on a shortened version of the BMW 326 chassis. The first 327, launched in 1937, was a cabriolet. In 1938, this was joined by a fixed head coupé version. The car was shorter and lower than its sedan counterpart, but shared the famous BMW grill and a streamlined form representative of the more progressive designs of the 1930s.
This superb BMW 327 Cabriolet left the factory at Eisenach on 20 June 1938 to its first owner in Rotterdam. Its original colour, according to the BMW archives - was dark green.
The car remained in Holland and has been on the road until the 1950's when an exchange engine (501) was installed by BMW Holland. This type of engine was an improved execution of the pre-war 327 engine, with an increased power output of 72 HP. The current owner purchased #73246 in 1990 from the BMW dealership in De Breukelen, and imported it to Germany where a ground up restoration was undertaken, using the best available specialists in Bavaria, photo-documentation of which is available in the car's file. The original body was overhauled and repainted in dark green over black; the car was retrimmed in brown leather and a new wooden frame was built and installed.
The engine was rebuilt and BMW 327 downdraft carburettors installed to add additional HP. A Volvo 5-speed gearbox was installed; however, the original gearbox is available and comes with the car. The rear springs were strengthened and new pressurized shock absorbers for better roadholding were installed.
The fuel tank was replaced by a stainless steel one, the radiator was replaced and all instruments were restored, and the electric system was changed into 12 V.
So equipped, the owner travelled with this car throughout Europe, ranging between Sicily in the south and Norway to the north. This is a superb driver's car in excellent condition, coming from a BMW collector who has carefully maintained it for the last twenty-five years, and as such is not to be missed.
