1973 FORD ESCORT MEXICO
Registration | FDF 272L |
Chassis Number | BFATNJ00295 |
Odometer reading | 92,075 miles |
Estimate | £20,000 - £24,000 |
We are delighted to offer this fabulous and genuine Ford Escort
Mexico. The Mk. I Escorts became one of the most successful rally
cars of the late 1960s and 1970s with arguably their greatest
victory being in the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally. The
Mexico, with its 1.6 crossflow Kent engine was a special edition
road car born in honour of this victory.
Since an extensive photographic rebuild some years ago the Mexico has had little use until recently whereby it has undergone a re-commission. The genuine type 49 shell is in excellent order and still boasts its original, Ford fitment, rear boot floor studs that would enable a skid guard to be fitted if you were to go rallying. A large history file shows thousands spent including an older engine rebuild by Burton Engineering who are the leading Ford performance specialists. Forged pistons, a 244 camshaft, race cylinder head and lightened flywheel make the car very lively; a rolling road dyno plot in 2010 records the power as being 168.5 bhp at the flywheel and 136.2 bhp at the wheels with 158.3 lb ft, making this a very flexible Escort indeed as was demonstrated by a recent road test. The car today looks very handsome with its smart clean lines and complimented by the very smart interior. A set of period 'Contour' seats, including head rests provide comfort for the front seat occupants.
The large history file also contains past MoT test certificates, invoices and a DVLA list of previous owners back to the early 1980s. Correspondence and membership of the Ford AVO Owners Club are also recorded and show this car as having a club register number of 774. A V5 UK registration document records the car as a 1973 Ford Escort Mexico with Historic Vehicle taxation class. A current MoT test certificate, valid until July 2015 and a recent service, complete the package.
This motor car represents an opportunity to acquire a genuine Mk. I Escort Mexico at a reasonable estimate especially given that demand is high for good genuine examples and in turn prices are climbing quickly.

1970-1975 FORD ESCORT MEXICO/RS2000
OverviewFord’s victory in the tough and demanding 1970 World Cup Rally to Mexico gave them the perfect excuse to unleash another ‘hotted up’ Escort upon an unsuspecting public. Based on the RS1600, the Mexico forewent the specialist twin-cam engine of that car and opted for a simpler – and therefore more reliable – 1558cc Kent overhead valve engine instead. Although less powerful (at only 86bhp) than other fast Fords, it was still a sprightly machine and completely looked the part with lairy colour schemes featuring contrasting side stripes.9382/4324 £1150/1586 £14,500 £10,000 £5000 £3000 Performance9.0secs108mph 100bhp 108lb/ft 26mpg Enginein-line fournormal petrol carburettor ChassisIndependent, coil springs, MacPherson strutLive axle, half elliptic leaf spring, radius arms front-engine RWD rack and pinion metal monocoque Four-speed manual Dimensions3978mm2400mm 1575mm 1384mm 915kgs | |||||
